ABOUT THE RATS

We’re a rugby club based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, 25km north of the CBD.

But we are so much more than that!

We have history spanning more than 50 years that has shaped and defined the core of who we are.

We are rich in culture, passion, great sportsmanship and of course a deep love for the game of Rugby.

“The Rats” as we are affectionately known, holds significant value for us. After experiencing many difficult years with many humiliating defeats the players were reminded by Doug Leslie Snr (a Rat of Tobruk), that to give up in the face of adversity is never an option. The tradition of the Rats of Tobruk, of bonding together and making commitments in the true spirit of mateship should always be remembered and will prevail just in the same way as the Desert Rats of Tobruk prevailed.

From that time on the Club became known as the Green Rats and their long held friendship with the ‘Rats of Tobruk Veterans Association’ and their legacy is honoured by a memorial on the hill at the southern end of ‘Rat Park’.

Consisting of:

4 Grades,

a strong Colts program and

an outstanding, high achieving Women’s 15 side

we are a thriving and engaged Club.

Over the years, our Club has been proudly and prominently represented at both national and international levels with many of our players playing Super Rugby, Wallabies and even abroad.

We believe that our Sponsors, Supporters and our Players are our finest assets. They are characterised by qualities such as loyalty, commitment and generosity which make the strong foundation of our ‘family’.

It’s this “family” that you’ll see and hear down at Rat Park on a Saturday cheering on every game and every grade, socialising afterwards in victory and in defeat. It’s this “family” that comes rain, hail or shine which makes things down here all the more special. Our side lines are laced with the finest of physicians and management and our grand stand filled with the most passionate of supporters.

Rats Values

Although the Club operates in an ever-changing environment, our values remain steadfast.

They don’t shift with time or circumstances, they don’t yield to whim or convenience,

they’re part of who we are.

At Warringah

we never give in,

we respect our opposition and

celebrate the community that supports us.

Our Members and Sponsors

The ongoing support of our members and sponsors have been key to our success so far.

Developing partnerships based on trust and mutual respect; and by championing the success of their objectives or business is of utmost importance to us.

Our Community

Our Club is committed to the needs of our broader community. Engaging in activity that betters and develops the people and organisations within our community is an ongoing focus for us.

To reinforce this commitment, we are deliberate in our engagement with and planning of a selected range of philanthropic causes such as Gotcha4Life, Cerebral Palsy Alliance, White Ribbon and Head Above Water to name just a few.

Women's Rugby

At Warringah we support and champion the efforts of our women’s team who’ve driven so much success both in 7s and 15s. World Cup winners and Olympian gold medalists, the Rattettes have been one of the most formidable forces in women’s rugby in NSW and Australian rugby history.

Warringah Junior Rugby

Warringah has one of the largest numbers of registered junior players in Australian junior rugby. The solid foundation of village clubs from Collaroy, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Newport, Pittwater, Terrey Hills and Wakehurst field over 50 teams ranging in age groups from under 7 years to under 17 years.

All competitions operate under the Pathways Laws and provide a series of age-specific modified rugby games. A sound knowledge base of learning to play, an emphasis on skills without the win at all costs attitude is provided from an early age and treated as a priority throughout all age groups.

Warringah Junior Rugby Club along with Manly Junior Rugby Union run a successful Minis competition for teams on the Northern Beaches from Under 6 to Under 9.

From the Under 10’s up, the fifteen-a-side game comes into play on the full size playing field. This progression builds confidence and provides good team experience.

During the season all village clubs combine to form representative teams from the Under 10’s to the Under 17’s age groups. These teams represent Warringah in the various NSW State Championships and have been very successful over the years. Players can represent Sydney at Under 15 and 16 levels and this can lead to even greater honours with State and National representation.
